Awakened from a dream, I curl up
and turn. The roses on the dresser
smile and your words bloom.
The red roses for Valentine’s Day.

Like in a film
thoughts of you unfold
moment by moment.
I vaguely hear
the sound of your spoon scooping cereal
the water stream in the shower
the buzzing noise of your electric razor
like a singing of cicada.

Your footsteps in and out of the bedroom.
Your lips touching my cheek lightly.
And the sound of the door shutting.

In your light
I fall asleep again under the warm quilt
happily like a child.

Upon waking
on the kitchen counter I find a half
grapefruit carefully cut and sectioned.
Such a loving touch is a milestone
for my newly found happiness.
— Chungmi Kim, “Being in Love”

She was afraid of getting too close to anyone. To her, closeness represented a loss rather than a gain.

You return when you feel like it, like rain. And like rain you are tender.

The dirty façades, the nameless crowds, the unremitting noise, the packed rush-hour trains, the gray skies, the billboards on every square centimeter of available space, the hopes and resignation, irritation and excitement. And everywhere, infinite options, infinite possibilities. An infinity, and at the same time, zero. We try to scoop it all up in our hands, and what we get is a handful of zero. That’s the city.

This was never any place I was meant to be.
— A slow boat to China by Haruki Murakami

Depression is living in a body that fights to survive with a mind that tries to die.

I love it when it all goes flat, and leaves and clouds
are instances of one idea—
for such is night, I think,
while day is how far
one must go

to connect parts.
— Jorie Graham, from Erosion
